Commemoration of the Living
This is the uninterrupted commemoration of names at forty consecutive Divine Liturgies, offered for the health and wellbeing of the living or for the repose of the souls of the departed. This rite is among the most powerful forms of the Church's intercession, for at every Liturgy the particle taken out for the one commemorated is immersed in the Holy Chalice with the prayer: "Wash away, O Lord, the sins of those here commemorated by Thy precious Blood" — bringing great spiritual benefit, forgiveness of sins and consolation to the souls for whom the prayer is raised.

Commemoration of the Departed
This commemoration is of particular importance for those who have fallen asleep in the first forty days after their passing to the Lord — a time when, according to the teaching of the Holy Fathers, the soul passes through the aerial toll-houses and stands before the Judgement of God — bringing them great help, rest and consolation.

Moleben (Service of Supplication)
A Moleben is a special service of supplication or thanksgiving offered to God, to the Mother of God, or to the saints on various occasions — illness, travel, the beginning of a work, the fulfilment of a blessed desire, or gratitude for gifts received. If you wish a Moleben (or Akathist) to be served to a particular saint or for a particular occasion, please indicate the saint honoured or the reason for the prayer, so that the service may be offered fittingly.

Lighting a candle in church is an ancient symbol of faith and pure offering — a silent prayer raised before God for the living and the departed. The Holy Fathers teach that every psalm is a prayer inspired by the Holy Spirit, and the commemoration of the names of loved ones during the reading brings great consolation, spiritual help and forgiveness of sins — for this reason it is of great benefit to request their commemoration at this holy rite.
